Accelerated Reader
Accelerated Reader is a reading assessment tool that we use with our pupils once they have completed the RWI Phonics programme.
It assesses pupils online every half term, and identifies what level of books will provide them with a ‘just right’ level of challenge. This book level is also known as the pupil’s Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD). By using this tool, we are able to ensure that pupils are challenged, whilst also able to access a wide range of books at a level that is still enjoyable to them.
Accelerated Reader also provides short quizzes for pupils to complete online after each book they read. This ensures pupils have understood what they have read.
Such detailed assessment provides teachers with a wealth of information about pupils’ strengths and weaknesses as a reader, which enables us to carefully plan teaching episodes to support them in moving forward. Progress can be carefully tracked, and those who need some additional support quickly identified
