Painting & Decorating
AIM Awards Level 1, Skills for Working in the Construction Industry, Painting and Decorating
Curriculum Intent
Our intention is to teach and support pupils towards a level one qualification but also to present painting and decorating as a life skill, introduce the painting and decorating industry and build pupil confidence, independence and initiative within a practical environment. Pupils will be supported in developing their resilience and independence to be able to choose their own tools, equipment and colours for their assessment and practice work. Students working towards a qualification will work towards either Award or Certificate, depending on what is appropriate for their ability.
Implementation
The qualification will be taught over two years using industry standard tools, equipment and materials within a classroom that mirrors a real life work setting. We will encourage as much real life simulation as is possible, for example, “this is your bedroom, how would you want to decorate it?” Upcycling furniture may also feature to provide a creative opportunity to demonstrate pupil ability. Lessons will mainly be practical in nature with either written, videoed or recoded assessment work to support pupil progress towards a successful outcome. All activities will be adapted to support individual needs and inclusion
Impact
Pupils will have an improved knowledge of a range of painting and decorating jobs and trades that are available within the current local job markets and have an increased knowledge of the skills required to fulfil those roles successfully. Pupils will have gained a level 1 qualification at a level appropriate to them which they can carry forward into the next part of their journey towards successful employment.
