The Prison Experience: A Visit from HMP Exeter

We had a very exciting visitor from HMP Exeter prison for Year 9’s Crime and Punishment, a topic about how crime and punishment has changed.

The Prison Officer, Mr Barter, came to visit all the Year 9 classes and talk about what prison life is like for the prisoners and the Prison Officers themselves. The students had some great pre-planned questions to ask when he arrived.

He was able to tell us all about the day to day running of the prison and some information about some of the more challenging inmates, which the students thoroughly enjoyed! Mr Barter also gave some history of the prison, with it being one of the oldest Victorian prisons in England – it was built in 1853!
