Humanities Curriculum Intent

At Combe Pafford School, all pupils in Years 4-9 have access to the Humanities Curriculum, where both History and Geography have equal value. Pupils of all abilities will learn, in a planned and progressive way, about the world around them. Our Curriculum provides opportunities for the youngest to study and appreciate their own immediate world; pupils are then able to make link and comparisons with other countries and cultures, climates, physical features and also to begin to appreciate the earth's processes and some challenges faced by the world today. Our Curriculum aims to stimulate pupil interest and understanding about the lives of people who lived in the past. We teach children a sense of chronology, and aim to develop a sense of identity and a cultural understanding. We encourage pupils to think critically about the world, its history and their future world, deepening pupil understanding of cause and effect.

We place huge emphasis on regular opportunities for pupils to develop Cultural Capital, through meaningful trips and Residentials, experiencing their learning first hand.

The curriculum intends:

• To develop key historical and geographical skills to apply in different contexts applicable in everyday life
• To foster an appreciation of the natural world, understanding the importance of Green Culture and environmental awareness
• To develop an awareness of their own locality and place within the wider world

• To think critically about given information

Our curriculum delivery:

Humanities is taught with an enquiry based approach, two lessons a week to pupils in Years 4-9. History and Geography are planned and delivered to ensure a balance of equal value across the year/ topics. Pupils in KS2 will spend the Autumn Term enquiring into their own locality, then comparing to a different location in Spring. Summer will then be used as an interest topic, building on targeted skills. Years 7-9 will follow an accessible and bespoke curriculum based on National Curriculum guidance (relevant to their understanding) to consolidate and extend their knowledge.

Through the study of Humanities at Combe Pafford, pupils make sense of their world and enrich their understanding of it, building on their Cultural Capital. Children will foster a curiosity and a sense of belonging to the bigger picture through time and space. Pupils will be able to use the geography and history skills developed in lessons and apply in real life situations.
